Day 9: The Day I Discovered the Internet
Estimated: Mid August 1991
I must admit, I'm a bit of a late bloomer. I didn't get fully exposed to the Internet until my freshman year of high school.
My grandmother wanted me to take some classes like home economics, even sewing over at the votech center, which was right across the street from the high school.
However, I was drawn to electronics more and opted to take keyboarding and things related more to computers.
The very first computer I had I didn't even use it for internet. It was extremely old school, like very basic DOS command prompts old school. It didn't even have any fancy graphics. My grandma picked it up from a yard sale or something. I mainly used it for word processing though. I don't think that computer would have been able to handle Internet.
The second computer I did save the money for and ended up ordering it online from QVC.
I got it during my college years, closer to when they were winding down (around junior or senior year time).
I was very proud to have that one. It came with a lot of included software, along with a web cam, speaker system (with subwoofer) and scanner. I don't remember if it came with a printer or not.
The web cam looked more like a small rectangular video camera than the round ones you see today. I rarely even used that thing. I wasn't quite that Internet savvy.
Yes, this is the exact make and model of the speaker system I have. It has outlasted all of the other computer speakers I've had.
I still have the speaker system to this day because that subwoofer is the business!
The scanner I also still have but I don't know if the software would even be compatible with what I currently have.
I remember the days of dial up. I didn't fuss about dial up much because I was just thankful to have a computer and that my grandparents let me have Internet, provided I would pay them money towards it. I would always ask them the best time for me to get on. I wanted to be considerate and not excessively tie the line up if they needed to use the phone. Since both my grandparents were primarily morning people, I would choose late afternoon and evening to get on to use the Internet.
I am very thankful I discovered the Internet. I got a chance to learn a lot of things I would have gotten access to as fast (if I had to depend on just books), plus I've got a chance to connect with a lot of wonderful people and have great experiences.
Day 9, that's a wrap!

You weren't that late if you knew about it in the early 90's. I didn't know until the late 90's.
The Internet wasn't really that much fun in the early 90s. It was basically two Dixie cups and some string...not much more than that.
